The town of Hershey, PA is an unincorporated community located in Dauphin County just 14 miles outside of Harrisburg. All municipal services are brought by Derry Township. The town was officially founded in 1903 by Milton Hershey as a home for his workers.
The community is best known for The Hershey Company (also known as Hershey’s) and Hersheypark. Milton Hershey founded The Hershey Company in 1894 as the Hershey Chocolate Company. A few years later in 1906, he opened Hersheypark as a leisure park for his employees. The first roller coaster was added in 1923.
Milton Hershey and his wife Catherine Hershey founded Milton Hershey School in 1909 as a trade school for white boys. By the 1960s and 70s, the school opened its doors to include girls and racial minorities. Tuition is free for all students. Enrollment was around 2,000 students in 2020. It is the wealthiest private school in the United States.
Hershey is home to around 14,257 people. Hershey’s total area covers 14.4 square miles. It is bordered by Hummelstown to the west and Palmdale to the east. U.S. Route 422 (Chocolate Ave) and U.S. Route 322 intersect in Hershey near to the PA Route 39 interchange.
